What Size Dehumidifier Do You Need in Mumbai?

Choosing a dehumidifier comes down to one number: extraction capacity in litres per day. A unit that's too small won't bring humidity into the 40–60% safe range during Mumbai's long monsoon. One that's too large means you overspend.

The scenario

A Mumbai resident selects:

  • City: Mumbai (peak monsoon outdoor RH ~85%; indoor levels commonly stay at 75–85% without active dehumidification)
  • Room: Bedroom, 10–20 m² / 100–200 sq ft
  • Floor: 4th floor+
  • Use: General moisture control

The tool recommends: 20 L/day, ₹22,000–40,000.

How the tool gets there

City sets the baseline. Mumbai's peak monsoon outdoor RH reaches ~85%, with indoor levels commonly at 75–85% without active dehumidification. The tool classifies it as a high-humidity city and assigns a higher starting capacity.

Room size scales it. For a bedroom in a high-humidity city, the starting base is 15 L/day.

Floor level adjusts. Ground floors get 30% extra capacity due to rising damp. The 4th floor reduces by 10%, bringing the calculated need to roughly 14 L/day.

Dehumidifiers are sold in practical bands: 10–12, 20, and 30 L/day. A 12 L/day unit would run near maximum in Mumbai monsoon conditions. The tool recommends the 20 L/day tier for reliable performance with headroom.

Primary use adds guidance. "General moisture control" recommends setting the humidistat to 50% RH and letting the unit cycle automatically. Other options like mould prevention or clothes drying generate specific tips.

What 20 L/day means in practice

A 20 L/day unit is rated at 30°C and 80% RH. Mumbai's monsoon conditions (28–32°C, 75–85% indoor RH) closely match, so the rated capacity is a realistic guide.

Overnight use: In a closed bedroom running 8–10 hours, expect RH to drop from 75–80% into the 50–55% range within a few hours. The humidistat cycles the compressor to hold that level. Use continuous drainage via hose for unattended operation.

Running cost: At 260–360 watts for 8 hours a day at ₹8 per unit, that's ₹17–23 per day or ₹500–700 per month.

All three support continuous drainage and auto-restart after power cuts. Prices are approximate as of mid-2026.

For bedroom use, noise matters. The ND328 is rated at 38 dB(A), below quiet library levels. Sharp and Origin Novita do not publish dB ratings for the ND322i or DW-J20FM-W. how to control humidity in a room

Regardless of city, the same four levers control indoor humidity:

  • Measure first. Track indoor RH for a few days so you know whether you have a real problem or a temporary spike.
  • Ventilate selectively. Open windows only when the outdoor dew point is lower than indoor; otherwise you add moisture.
  • Extract with a compressor dehumidifier. Peltier units are too weak for Indian monsoon conditions. Size the unit to the room and moisture load.
  • Set the target to around 50% RH. Going below 40% can dry skin and airways without adding comfort.

Before you buy

Four things to verify:

  1. Compressor type (not Peltier/thermoelectric)
  2. Built-in humidistat with adjustable target RH
  3. Continuous drainage via hose
  4. Auto-restart after power cut

And one thing to do first: measure your indoor humidity for a few days. Below 60%, your AC's dry mode may be enough. Regularly above 70%, you need a dehumidifier.
