Delhi's humidity problem is seasonal but intense. For most of the year the city is dry, but once monsoon arrives, indoor humidity can stay above 70% for three to four months. Ground floor homes with large living spaces face the worst conditions due to rising damp, incoming monsoon moisture, and a large volume of air to dehumidify.

The scenario
A Delhi resident selects:
- City: Delhi (peak monsoon outdoor RH ~78%; indoor levels commonly reach 65–75% without active dehumidification)
- Room: Large space, 35–50 m² / 375–540 sq ft
- Floor: Ground floor
- Use: Mould prevention
The tool recommends: 30 L/day capacity (₹16,000–50,000).
How the tool gets there
City sets the baseline. Delhi is classified as a moderate-humidity city. Peak monsoon outdoor RH reaches ~78%, with the humid season concentrated between June and September. This gives a lower starting capacity compared to coastal cities.
Room size scales it. A large open space (35–50 m²) in a moderate-humidity city starts at a base of 22 L/day.
Floor level and use case push it higher. Ground floors get a 30% capacity increase due to rising damp. After this adjustment, the calculated requirement is 29 L/day, which falls in the 30 L/day tier.
A 20 L/day unit could technically handle this room size in Delhi's moderate humidity. But ground floor rising damp adds a constant moisture load that doesn't stop when the rain does. And mould prevention demands the unit hold RH below 60% continuously, not just bring it down for a few hours. A 30 L/day unit running at 50–60% of capacity handles this better than a 20 L/day unit running near its maximum. It responds faster to humidity spikes and maintains the target more consistently.
Primary use adds guidance. "Mould prevention" recommends prioritising continuous drainage and auto-restart so the unit runs uninterrupted. Any gap in dehumidification (a full tank, a power cut) gives mould spores an opening.
What 30 L/day means in practice
A 30 L/day unit is rated at 30°C and 80% RH. Delhi's warm monsoon conditions allow compressor dehumidifiers to work efficiently. In real conditions, you can expect extraction of roughly 20–25 L/day.
In a large ground floor room running 10–12 hours, expect indoor RH to drop from 70–75% into the low 50s within a few hours. For mould prevention, keep it running as long as possible during monsoon months.
Running cost: At 255–565 watts for 10 hours a day at ₹8 per unit, that's ₹20–45 per day or ₹600–1,350 per month.

Continuous drainage is essential for mould prevention. At full extraction, Power Pye's 6.5L tank fills in roughly 5 hours. Connect the hose to a floor drain or elevated bucket and let it run. Delhi-specific consideration: If you don't already own an air purifier, the Sharp DW-T30FM's HEPA filter gives you dual-season utility: humidity during monsoon (June–September), PM2.5 during winter smog (October–February). AC dry mode vs a dehumidifier in Delhi
Delhi's monsoon is hot. Daytime temperatures stay at 30–38°C, nights rarely drop below 25–27°C. Unlike Bengaluru, where the AC risks making a cool room uncomfortably cold, in Delhi you almost always want cooling. The AC is already earning its keep on temperature.
The problem is asking it to handle humidity as well. In a large ground floor space, the AC may bring temperature down but leave indoor RH at 65–70%, above the 60% threshold for mould. Dry mode helps but has limits: in a large space with active rising damp, it is unlikely to hold RH below 60% consistently.

For this scenario, the most effective approach is running both: AC for temperature, dehumidifier for humidity. Trying to make the AC do both jobs in a large, moisture-prone space usually means neither gets done well.
how to control humidity in a room
Regardless of city, the same four levers control indoor humidity:
- Measure first. Track indoor RH for a few days so you know whether you have a real problem or a temporary spike.
- Ventilate selectively. Open windows only when the outdoor dew point is lower than indoor; otherwise you add moisture.
- Extract with a compressor dehumidifier. Peltier units are too weak for Indian monsoon conditions. Size the unit to the room and moisture load.
- Set the target to around 50% RH. Going below 40% can dry skin and airways without adding comfort.

Before you buy
Four things to verify:
- Compressor type (not Peltier/thermoelectric)
- Built-in humidistat with adjustable target RH
- Continuous drainage via hose
- Auto-restart after power cut
And one thing to do first: measure your indoor humidity for a few days. Below 60%, your AC's dry mode may be enough. Regularly above 65–70% during monsoon, you need a dehumidifier. On a ground floor with visible mould, a dehumidifier is almost always necessary.
