Kolkata has one of the longest sustained humidity seasons in India. While most cities deal with three to four months of high moisture, Kolkata stays humid from May through October. Indoor humidity regularly exceeds 75% during this period without active dehumidification.
Our Dehumidifier Selector recommends the right capacity based on room size, floor level, and primary use. Here's how it works for a Kolkata home.
The scenario
A Kolkata resident selects:
- City: Kolkata (peak monsoon outdoor RH ~83%; indoor levels commonly reach 75–83% without active dehumidification; sustained humidity May–Oct)
- Room: Living room, 20–35 m² / 200–375 sq ft
- Floor: 1st–3rd floor
- Use: General moisture control
The tool recommends: 30 L/day capacity (₹16,000–50,000).
How the tool gets there
City sets the baseline. Kolkata is classified as a high-humidity city. Peak monsoon outdoor RH reaches ~83%, and the humid season stretches from May through October, notably longer than Delhi (June–September) or Mumbai (June–September with moderate shoulder months). The tool assigns a higher starting capacity for high-humidity cities.
Room size scales it. A living room (20–35 m²) in a high-humidity city starts at a base of 22 L/day.
Floor level keeps it steady. The 1st–3rd floor range carries no significant adjustment. The calculated requirement stays at 22 L/day.
Dehumidifiers are sold in practical bands: 10–12, 20, and 30 L/day. At 22, the requirement exceeds the 20 L/day tier and moves to 30 L/day. In Kolkata's case, this headroom is useful. With six months of sustained humidity, a unit running within its capacity lasts longer, cycles less aggressively, and maintains target RH more consistently.
Primary use adds guidance. "General moisture control" recommends setting the humidistat to 50% RH and letting the unit cycle automatically.
What 30 L/day means in practice
A 30 L/day unit is rated at 30°C and 80% RH. Kolkata's monsoon conditions (30–35°C, 75–83% indoor RH) closely match this rating point. Unlike in drier cities where real-world extraction drops, a 30 L/day unit in Kolkata's high humidity will often work close to its full rated capacity.
In a living room running 8–10 hours, expect indoor RH to drop from 75–80% into the low 50s within a few hours. The humidistat cycles the compressor to hold that level. Use continuous drainage via hose for unattended operation.
Running cost: At 255–565 watts for 10 hours a day at ₹8 per unit, that's ₹20–45 per day or ₹600–1,350 per month. Over six months, the seasonal cost is ₹3,600–8,100. The Power Pye at 255W sits at the lower end of this range.

| Model | Brand | Watts | Tank | HEPA | Price (approx.) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30L 3-in-1 | Power Pye | 255W | 6.5L | No | ~₹16,000 | Lowest power draw. Best value for a long season. |
| 30L | White Westinghouse | 565W | 5.0L | No | ~₹34,000 | 3-in-1 design (dehumidifier + dryer + basic air purifier). |
| DW-T30FM | Sharp | 330W | 4.5L | Yes | ~₹50,000 | HEPA filter. 26 dB(A) on lowest setting. |
Continuous drainage is essential during Kolkata's long season. At full extraction, Power Pye's 6.5L tank fills in roughly 5 hours. Connect the hose to a floor drain or elevated bucket. All three models support continuous drainage and auto-restart after power cuts. Prices are approximate as of mid-2026.
On noise: The Sharp DW-T30FM claims 26 dB(A) on its lowest setting. Power Pye does not publish a dB rating. For a living room during the day, noise is less critical than for bedroom use. Try our Noise Simulator to compare levels.
Kolkata-specific considerations: With six months of use, the Power Pye's lower wattage (255W vs 565W for White Westinghouse) makes a meaningful difference in running cost. Over the season, the Power Pye costs roughly ₹3,600 to run; the White Westinghouse roughly ₹8,100. If you don't already own an air purifier, the Sharp DW-T30FM's HEPA filter adds value during Kolkata's winter pollution episodes and Diwali/Kali Puja firecracker season.
AC dry mode vs a dehumidifier in Kolkata
Kolkata's monsoon is both hot and humid. Daytime temperatures stay at 30–35°C, nights at 25–27°C. Like Delhi, you almost always want the AC for cooling. The question is whether it can handle humidity as well.
In a living room (20–35 m²), the AC may bring temperature down but leave indoor RH at 65–75%. Dry mode helps in smaller rooms but is less effective in a larger living space where the humidity load is sustained. Kolkata's long season also means the AC compressor runs at high load for six months if it handles both cooling and dehumidification. A dedicated dehumidifier takes the moisture load off the AC.
| Condition | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Hot + humid (daytime, >30°C, RH >70%) | AC cool mode handles both. Add dehumidifier if RH stays above 60% after cooling. |
| Warm + humid (25–30°C, RH >65%) | AC dry mode for 1–2 hours, then dehumidifier to hold target RH. |
| Rainy evening/night (25–27°C, RH >75%) | Dehumidifier alone. AC adds unnecessary cooling. |
| Pre/post-monsoon (May, October) | Dehumidifier only. Temperatures are moderate, humidity is the main problem. |
In a living room (20–35 m²) in Kolkata, the AC alone may not bring RH below 60% even in cool mode, especially during peak monsoon weeks. If you find RH staying above 60% with the AC running, add the dehumidifier alongside.
How to control humidity in a room
Regardless of city, the same four levers control indoor humidity:
- Measure first. Track indoor RH for a few days so you know whether you have a real problem or a temporary spike.
- Ventilate selectively. Open windows only when the outdoor dew point is lower than indoor; otherwise you add moisture.
- Extract with a compressor dehumidifier. Peltier units are too weak for Indian monsoon conditions. Size the unit to the room and moisture load.
- Set the target to around 50% RH. Going below 40% can dry skin and airways without adding comfort.
For a deeper walkthrough, see our dehumidifier buying guide. Kolkata's long humid season is closest to Mumbai and Chennai, while Bengaluru and Delhi show the drier end of the spectrum.
Before you buy
Four things to verify:
- Compressor type (not Peltier/thermoelectric)
- Built-in humidistat with adjustable target RH
- Continuous drainage via hose
- Auto-restart after power cut
And one thing to do first: measure your indoor humidity for a few days. Below 60%, your AC's dry mode may be enough. Regularly above 70% during Kolkata's long monsoon season, you need a dehumidifier.
