What Size Dehumidifier Do You Need in Chennai?

A walkthrough of the Dehumidifier Selector for a Chennai bedroom: why 20 L/day is the right tier, what it means in practice, and which models to consider.

Chennai's humidity pattern is unlike any other major Indian city. It has two monsoon seasons: the southwest monsoon (June–September) brings moderate humidity, while the northeast monsoon (October–December) brings the heaviest rainfall and peak humidity. Ground floor bedrooms also receive additional moisture from rising damp during both monsoon periods.

The scenario

A Chennai resident selects:

  • City: Chennai (peak monsoon outdoor RH ~80% in November; dual monsoon pattern with NE monsoon Oct–Dec as the peak)
  • Room: Bedroom, 10–20 m² / 100–200 sq ft
  • Floor: Ground floor
  • Use: General moisture control

The tool recommends: 20 L/day capacity (₹22,000–40,000).

How the tool gets there

City sets the baseline. Chennai is classified as a high-humidity city. Peak humidity reaches ~80% during the northeast monsoon (November). Unlike other Indian cities where humidity peaks during June–August, Chennai's worst months are October through December. The southwest monsoon (June–September) brings moderate humidity (63–74%) but less rainfall on the Coromandel Coast, which is shielded by the Western Ghats.

Room size scales it. A bedroom (10–20 m²) in a high-humidity city starts at a base of 15 L/day.

Floor level pushes it up. Ground floors get a 30% capacity increase due to rising damp. After this adjustment, the calculated requirement is roughly 20 L/day, sitting at the top of the 20 L/day tier. This ensures enough capacity for the combined load of monsoon humidity and rising damp from below.

Primary use adds guidance. "General moisture control" recommends setting the humidistat to 50% RH and letting the unit cycle automatically.

What 20 L/day means in practice

A 20 L/day unit is rated at 30°C and 80% RH. During the southwest monsoon (June–September), hot conditions (33–36°C) with moderate humidity (63–74%) mean the unit extracts below rated capacity. During the northeast monsoon, conditions move closer to the unit's rating point (29–31°C and 74–80% humidity), so real-world extraction improves.

Overnight use: In a closed ground floor bedroom running 8–10 hours, expect indoor RH to drop from 72–78% into the mid-50s within a few hours. The humidistat cycles the compressor to hold that level. Connect continuous drainage for unattended overnight operation.

Running cost: At 260–360 watts for 8 hours a day at ₹8 per unit, that's ₹17–23 per day or ₹500–690 per month.

Continuous drainage matters for ground floor bedrooms. Tanks fill every 4–5 hours at sustained extraction. Connect the drainage hose before running overnight. All four models support continuous drainage and auto-restart after power cuts. Prices are approximate as of mid-2026.

Chennai-specific consideration: Over a typical five-month dehumidification season (June–October or October–February depending on your worst window), the Sharp DW-J20FM-W at 260W costs roughly ₹2,550 to run; the ND322i at 360W costs roughly ₹3,450. Chennai does not have Delhi's severe winter PM2.5 problem, so the Sharp's HEPA filter is useful for dust, pollen, and Deepavali season, though not essential. AC dry mode vs a dehumidifier in Chennai

Chennai's two monsoon seasons create two different AC situations.

Southwest monsoon (June–September): Temperatures are high (33–36°C). You want the AC for cooling. Humidity is moderate (63–74%). AC cool mode removes some moisture alongside cooling. For a bedroom, dry mode after an initial cool-down may be sufficient.

Northeast monsoon (October–December): This is where Chennai differs from every other city in this series. Temperatures drop to 29–31°C during the day and 23–25°C at night. Running the AC to dehumidify risks making the bedroom uncomfortably cool for sleeping. A standalone dehumidifier removes moisture without cooling further.

The northeast monsoon is when a dehumidifier earns its keep in Chennai. The AC handles June–September. October–December is dehumidifier territory.

How to control humidity in a room

Regardless of city, the same four levers control indoor humidity:

  • Measure first. Track indoor RH for a few days so you know whether you have a real problem or a temporary spike.
  • Ventilate selectively. Open windows only when the outdoor dew point is lower than indoor; otherwise you add moisture.
  • Extract with a compressor dehumidifier. Peltier units are too weak for Indian monsoon conditions. Size the unit to the room and moisture load.
  • Set the target to around 50% RH. Going below 40% can dry skin and airways without adding comfort.

Before you buy

Four things to verify:

  1. Compressor type (not Peltier/thermoelectric)
  2. Built-in humidistat with adjustable target RH
  3. Continuous drainage via hose
  4. Auto-restart after power cut

And one thing to do first: measure your indoor humidity for a few days. Below 60%, your AC's dry mode may be enough. Regularly above 70% during either monsoon season, you need a dehumidifier.
