Choosing a dehumidifier comes down to one number: extraction capacity in litres per day. A unit that's too small won't bring humidity into the 40–60% safe range during Bengaluru's monsoon months. One that's too large means overspending on capacity you rarely need in Bengaluru's moderate monsoon.

The scenario
A Bengaluru resident selects:
- City: Bengaluru (peak monsoon outdoor RH ~80% in August; moderate monsoon, less extreme than coastal cities)
- Room: Bedroom, 10–20 m² / 100–200 sq ft
- Floor: 1st–3rd floor
- Use: General moisture control
The tool recommends: 10–12 L/day, ₹10,000–22,000.
How the tool gets there
City sets the baseline. Bengaluru's peak monsoon outdoor RH reaches ~80% in August (IMD normals, 1991–2021), with the monsoon season sustaining outdoor levels between 72–80% from June through September. Indoor levels in an unventilated room typically run 70–75% RH during peak months without active dehumidification. The tool classifies it as a moderate-humidity city and assigns a lower starting capacity than coastal cities like Mumbai or Chennai.
Room size scales it. For a bedroom in a moderate-humidity city, the base capacity is lower than for high-humidity coastal cities.
Floor level adjusts. Ground floors get extra capacity due to rising damp. The 1st–3rd floor range carries no significant adjustment in either direction. The calculated need stays within the 10–12 L/day band.
Dehumidifiers are sold in practical bands: 10–12, 20, and 30 L/day. For Bengaluru's moderate monsoon conditions, the 10–12 L/day tier is appropriate. Going up to 20 L/day would mean spending significantly more for headroom you rarely need.
Primary use adds guidance. "General moisture control" recommends setting the humidistat to 50% RH and letting the unit cycle automatically.
What 10–12 L/day means in practice
A 10–12 L/day unit is rated at 30°C and 80% RH. Bengaluru's monsoon conditions are milder (24–28°C, 70–75% indoor RH), so the unit will operate below its rated capacity. This is actually an advantage. Because Bengaluru's conditions are milder than the unit's rating point, it runs efficiently and the compressor cycles less frequently.
Overnight use: In a closed bedroom running 8–10 hours, expect RH to drop from around 70% into the 50–55% range. The humidistat cycles the compressor to hold that level. Use continuous drainage via hose for unattended operation.
Running cost: At 173–210 watts for 8 hours a day at ₹8 per unit, that's roughly ₹11–14 per day or ₹340–430 per month. Noticeably lower than a 20 L/day unit running the same hours.

Both support continuous drainage and auto-restart after power cuts. The Sharp DW-P10M-W draws less power at 173W, which adds up over a monsoon season. It also includes Plasmacluster ion air treatment and a carbon pre-filter — useful during winter months when the dehumidifier is otherwise idle, though neither model carries a true HEPA filter.

AC dry mode vs a dehumidifier in Bengaluru
In Mumbai or Chennai, running the AC to bring down humidity feels like relief. The ambient temperature is already 30–32°C. Bengaluru is different. Monsoon temperatures here average 19–28°C, with nights dropping to 19–20°C. On a rainy July evening, your room may already be at 22–23°C indoors.
Thermal discomfort occurs when room temperature drops below what most people find comfortable at rest, typically below 20–21°C indoors. It often shows up as feeling cold, restless sleep, or reaching for a blanket.
Running the AC on full cooling mode to extract moisture will often push the room temperature below this threshold. AC dry mode is better. It runs the compressor at lower capacity, removing moisture without dropping temperature as aggressively. But even dry mode can overshoot on a cool Bengaluru night.

This is why measuring your indoor RH first matters more in Bengaluru than in coastal cities. The answer isn't always a dehumidifier. But when it is, the cooler ambient temperature makes a dedicated unit more appropriate than leaning on the AC.
how to control humidity in a room
Regardless of city, the same four levers control indoor humidity:
- Measure first. Track indoor RH for a few days so you know whether you have a real problem or a temporary spike.
- Ventilate selectively. Open windows only when the outdoor dew point is lower than indoor; otherwise you add moisture.
- Extract with a compressor dehumidifier. Peltier units are too weak for Indian monsoon conditions. Size the unit to the room and moisture load.
- Set the target to around 50% RH. Going below 40% can dry skin and airways without adding comfort.

Four things to verify:
- Compressor type (not Peltier/thermoelectric)
- Built-in humidistat with adjustable target RH
- Continuous drainage via hose
- Auto-restart after power cut
And one thing to do first: measure your indoor humidity for a few days. Bengaluru's humidity is moderate and seasonal. Below 60%, your AC's dry mode may be enough. Regularly above 70% during monsoon months, a dehumidifier makes sense.
