8 Dehumidifier Myths Explained

AC dry mode, Peltier mini-units, coastal-only thinking and silica gel: eight common dehumidifier myths in Indian homes, debunked with numbers.

Dehumidifiers are still a new category in Indian homes. Most people have never owned one, and a lot of what gets passed around is guesswork or outdated information.

Myth 1

My AC already dehumidifies, so I don't need a separate dehumidifier.

Reality: Your AC removes some moisture, but only as a by-product of cooling. It has no humidistat and cannot target a specific humidity level. A standalone dehumidifier lets you set a target RH (50% is a sensible default) and cycles automatically to maintain it. A dedicated 20 L/day dehumidifier can extract far more moisture per hour than an AC in dry mode, while using less electricity (250–450 W vs 400–800 W). It also works without cooling the room, which matters on cool, rainy monsoon evenings. If indoor RH stays below 60% with the AC on, dry mode may be enough. If it regularly crosses 70% (common in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi and Goa), the AC alone usually will not be enough.
Myth 2

A dehumidifier cools the room like an AC.

Reality: The opposite is true. A dehumidifier actually warms the room slightly, typically by 2–3°C, because both coils (cold and hot) sit inside the room, so the waste heat stays inside. You get drier air without making the room cold. In an AC, the hot coil sits outside the room, which is why an AC cools the space while a dehumidifier does not. On cool, rainy monsoon evenings this is helpful: you want less moisture, not a colder room.
Myth 3

Those small ₹2,000–5,000 dehumidifiers work fine.

Reality: Not for a room. Units in this price range are almost always Peltier (thermoelectric) devices that extract 200–500 ml per day. A compressor dehumidifier extracts 10–30 litres per day. Peltier units may help inside a single closed wardrobe or shoe cabinet, but they cannot dehumidify a room. A real compressor dehumidifier starts at roughly ₹10,000. If the listing does not say "compressor" and does not specify extraction in litres per day, be cautious.
Myth 4

Dehumidifiers are only for coastal cities.

Reality: Coastal cities have the worst humidity year-round, but Delhi hits 78% average RH during peak monsoon. Ahmedabad reaches 72%. Hyderabad 70%. Bengaluru 72%. Even "dry" cities spend three to four months above the 60% threshold where dust mites, mould and formaldehyde off-gassing become problems. Mould in your bathroom, musty wardrobes, condensation on windows during the rains? The problem is humidity, not geography.
Myth 5

A dehumidifier will make the air too dry.

Reality: Not if it has a humidistat. You set your target RH (50% is a good default), and the unit cycles off when it reaches that level — the same principle as your AC thermostat. Over-drying is only a risk with a unit that has no humidistat running continuously in a small, sealed room.
Myth 6

Dehumidifiers are expensive to run.

Reality: A 20 L/day compressor dehumidifier draws 250–450 watts. Running it 8 hours a day at ₹8 per unit costs ₹16–29 per day, or ₹480–870 per month. For perspective, a 1.5-ton inverter AC in dry mode draws 400–800 watts. The AC uses roughly twice the electricity but extracts significantly less moisture, because dehumidification is not its primary function. If you are already running your AC mainly to control humidity, switching to a dedicated dehumidifier for that job will usually cost less electricity while delivering better results.
Myth 7

A dehumidifier replaces an air purifier.

Reality: They do completely different things. A dehumidifier removes moisture, which reduces mould, dust mites and formaldehyde off-gassing. An air purifier removes PM2.5, pollen and allergens, but does nothing about moisture. During monsoon, homes face both problems at once: high humidity and indoor pollutants concentrated by closed windows. For most Indian homes, running both a dehumidifier and an air purifier during the rains is the ideal setup. Some Sharp models (DW-J20FM-W, DW-T30FM) combine HEPA filtration with dehumidification in one unit, which can simplify this.
Myth 8

Silica gel and Absorbia packets are enough.

Reality: For a wardrobe drawer or a camera bag, yes. For a room, no. A calcium chloride absorber takes in a few hundred millilitres over weeks. A compressor dehumidifier extracts 10–30 litres per day — completely different scales. Use absorbers for storage. Use a dehumidifier for the rooms you live in.

The Bottom Line

The healthy range for indoor humidity is 40–60% RH. Most Indian homes exceed this for four to five months every year.

Before buying anything, spend ₹300–500 on a digital hygrometer. Measure your indoor humidity for a few days. If it stays below 60%, your AC may be enough. If it regularly crosses 70%, you know what to do.
