Most runners check the temperature before heading out. If it's 32°C or 34°C, they decide whether to go or push it to the evening. But temperature is a poor indicator of how hard your run will actually feel.
The same 34°C can feel manageable on a breezy morning and completely exhausting on a humid, still afternoon with strong sun. When you run, your body generates significantly more metabolic heat than during most daily activities. This makes you far more sensitive to humidity, wind, and solar radiation.

This is where heat stress data becomes useful. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) accounts for air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and radiant heat, giving a much more accurate picture of how your body will experience the conditions.

Don't default to your usual running time. In cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Jaipur, heat stress often enters the "Strong" zone by 8:30–9:00 AM from April to June. Running at 6:00 AM versus 9:00 AM can make a noticeable difference in how you feel and recover.
On high heat stress days, splitting your run into two shorter sessions can be more effective than forcing one long run.
3. Adjust effort, not just timing
Don't chase the same paces you hit on cooler days. Heat stress increases perceived effort. Hydrate proactively, and be ready to shorten or stop your run if you feel unusually heavy or dizzy.
What a Real May Morning Looks Like
On most days in May, heat stress in cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Jaipur crosses into the "Strong" category by 9–10 AM and stays "Very Strong" or "Extreme" through the afternoon.
This pattern varies by city. Bengaluru's altitude (900m) and lower humidity (around 30% in early May) give runners a longer safe window, often stretching to 9 or 9:30 AM. But as pre-monsoon moisture builds in late May, humidity can double, and that advantage shrinks quickly. Mumbai's high humidity keeps UTCI elevated even when air temperature looks moderate. Chennai's high humidity means even early morning runs carry a higher baseline load.
