This summer, most of us will do the same thing. We will look at our phones, see 37°C or 39°C, and quickly decide: should I step out for a walk? Can the kids play outside? Should I open the windows?
Temperature alone does not tell us the full story. The same 38°C can feel manageable on a dry, breezy evening and completely draining on a humid, still afternoon with strong sun. Our body does not just experience air temperature; it experiences the combined effect of heat, humidity, wind, and direct sunlight.
The scientific measure that captures all of this is called UTCI, the Universal Thermal Climate Index. It reflects what the human body actually experiences, not what a thermometer reads.

Accounts for humidity, low wind, and radiant heat from roads and buildings.
That is an 11°C gap, the difference between "uncomfortable" and "your body can no longer cool itself." This real-feel measure is UTCI.
This gap matters in real life
It matters for the delivery partner climbing multiple floors with heavy orders in the afternoon heat. For security guards, policemen and outdoor workers standing in direct sun for hours. For elderly parents, young children and pregnant women. When heat stress moves from "moderate" into "strong" or "extreme," it stops being just uncomfortable. It becomes genuinely risky, especially when combined with physical effort, age, pregnancy or certain medications.

Reduced sweating capacity and slower thermoregulation.
Pregnant women
Higher metabolic rate and increased dehydration risk.
Young children
Underdeveloped thermoregulation and higher surface-to-mass ratio.
Cardiac / respiratory patients
Heart and lungs work harder to dissipate heat.
Outdoor workers
Sustained exertion with direct sun exposure for hours.
People on certain medication
Beta-blockers, diuretics and antihistamines impair cooling.

A typical May day in Delhi
Here is what a 24-hour UTCI profile looks like for Delhi right now. The early morning and late evening offer brief windows of moderate stress. By mid-morning, conditions cross into "strong." The afternoon is firmly "very strong" to "extreme."

Notice how narrow the green and yellow windows are. For someone elderly or on medication, even the "moderate" morning hours may warrant caution. For outdoor workers, the stretch from 10 AM to 5 PM is seven straight hours of very strong to extreme stress. This pattern plays out daily across Indian cities from April through June.
Why this also matters for your indoor air
On days with strong or extreme heat stress, keeping windows closed often makes sense. But when heat stress drops, usually in the early morning or late evening, it can be a better time to ventilate, if the outdoor AQI allows it.
