Tucking It in a Corner
Why it fails:
Corners are dead zones. Air circulates poorly here. The purifier can only draw from a narrow angle (roughly 90°), dramatically reducing the volume of air it can process. It ends up recirculating the same small pocket of air.
The fix:
Move it at least 2-3 feet away from any corner, ideally along a wall with clear space on both sides.
Placing It Behind Furniture
Why it fails:
A sofa, bookshelf, or curtain in front of the intake or output creates a physical barrier. The purifier works harder but moves less air. Some models' sensors may also give inaccurate readings because they're only measuring the trapped air pocket.
The fix:
Ensure at least 3 feet of clearance in front of the output vent and 1-2 feet around the intake. The purifier should have a clear "line of sight" to the room.
Putting It on the Floor (Sometimes)
Why it fails:
Floor placement isn't always wrong: it depends on what you're targeting. Heavy dust and pet dander settle near the floor, so a floor-level purifier catches these well. But for smoke, cooking fumes, and VOCs (which rise), a floor-level purifier is at a disadvantage.
The fix:
For general air quality, elevate the purifier 2-4 feet (on a table or sturdy stand). For pet owners or dust-heavy rooms, floor placement is fine, just ensure the intake isn't blocked by carpet or rugs.
Placing It Near Windows or Doors
Why it fails:
Open windows and doors create a constant stream of unfiltered air. The purifier ends up trying to clean an infinite supply of outdoor air rather than recirculating and cleaning the room's air. It's like mopping the floor with the door open during a dust storm.
The fix:
Place the purifier away from windows and doors. If you need ventilation, open a window on the opposite side of the room from the purifier: this creates a flow where outdoor air enters, mixes, and gets pulled toward the purifier.
Pointing It at a Wall
Why it fails:
If the output vent faces a wall, the clean air bounces back immediately and gets recirculated without reaching the rest of the room. The purifier's sensor may show "clean air" while the far side of the room remains polluted.
The fix:
Orient the output vent toward the open room. Ideally, the clean air should have the longest possible path before hitting an obstacle.
