Portable car air purifiers in India: what the makers actually publish

Every winter the same question arrives: should I put an air purifier in my car? Many of the answers online come as star ratings and discount codes. I wanted to answer the question underneath them, which is whether these things do anything you could measure.

So I went to the source: every portable car purifier I could find listed for India by a manufacturer or its authorised distributor, checked against that maker's own page (brochure, spec sheet, accessory store). Not marketplace listings, not reviews. Where a maker publishes no number, this piece says so, because the silence is part of the finding.

The short version

• 13 listings across four brands: IQAir, Philips, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki.
• 11 of those are devices. The other two are a replacement cartridge and an air-quality meter.
• 6 devices publish a clean-air delivery rate (CADR). One publishes airflow only. Four publish nothing.
• 1 publishes the price of a replacement filter.
• 5 products were left out because their specification or current availability could not be confirmed.
• No product here publishes an airflow figure anywhere near the rate at which a portable purifier has been shown to add measurable benefit in a car.

Purifier brands

Reading the table:

• Philips is the most forthcoming by a distance. The GoPure Power publishes a CADR of 60 m³/h for PM2.5 plus separate rates for formaldehyde and toluene, and its leaflet adds a 350-hour filter life and a draw of up to 12 W. The 5211 and 5212 publish 16 m³/h, the 3211 fifteen, the SlimLine 230 ten.
• IQAir's Atem Car is the highest-priced listed purifier, and it publishes airflow rather than CADR: 12, 20 and 30 m³/h across three fan speeds. Airflow counts air moved. CADR counts air actually cleaned. Its "up to 20 air changes per hour" describes a car-sized cabin, not a CADR, and should not be read against the Philips 60.
• Philips publishes no India prices at all, for any of the seven models in this table.

Carmakers' own accessories

Reading the table:

• Hyundai's ₹6,422 accessory publishes a CADR of 14 m³/h and a claim that it cleans the car in under fifteen minutes. That is the only quantified performance figure any carmaker in this table publishes.
• Maruti publishes the most parts and the least data: four listings with prices and part numbers, filtration described on the product pages, no test figure anywhere. Its ₹360 cartridge is the only replacement filter price published by anyone in this piece.
• Two of these are not purifiers. The Premium Car Ionizer has no filter. The AQI meter only measures.

The flow-rate evidence

One study gives us a useful range rather than a universal threshold. Renck and Jung (2025) tested plug-in purifiers in real cabins across a wide span of flow rates.

The minimum flow at which a supplemental purifier starts to earn its place lies somewhere between those two tested points.

Where the India-market products sit:

• IQAir's fastest setting, 30 m³/h, is 500 lpm. That is inside the untested gap, well short of the unit that worked.
• Hyundai's 14 m³/h is a CADR, not an airflow figure, but it is the same order of magnitude as the unit that did nothing.
• Philips' 60 m³/h is a PM2.5 CADR, so it cannot be set against the study's 84 m³/h benchmark at all.

That distinction matters more than any single number here. CADR, raw airflow, cleaning-time claims and pollutant-specific results are four different things, and only one of them is what the study measured.

So the honest summary is narrow. Most products here publish no airflow at all, the few that do sit well below the unit that showed a benefit, and the CADR figures have to be read on their own terms.

The same study is more encouraging about factory cabin filters, for one pollutant in particular: two filters with an activated-carbon layer cut NO₂ by 64 to 67%, while cheap aftermarket filters cut it by nothing. That result is about NO₂ specifically, not a general verdict on particle filtration.

Start with the cabin filter, then ask three questions

The cabin filter is already in the car's HVAC air path, so its condition and type matter whether or not you add anything else. It is also cheap. Maruti sells a plain PM2.5 cabin filter (part 990J0M56RS0-010) for ₹650, less than every priced purifier in either table.

Follow your manufacturer's replacement guidance, and in a dusty city ask your dealer whether a shorter interval makes sense. I have written separately about why Indian dust shortens cabin filter life and what recirculation does to in-cabin PM2.5.

If you still want a portable unit, three questions:

1. What is the particle CADR, or the airflow? A maker that publishes neither gives you almost nothing to compare. If it publishes a CADR, check which pollutant and which test method. If it publishes airflow, remember that airflow is not CADR. Four of the eleven devices here publish neither.
2. What does the filter cost, and how often? Philips publishes a 350-hour life, roughly eight months if the unit runs 90 minutes a day, and only Maruti publishes a price. Ask the dealer before you buy, not after.
3. Is it a filter or an ioniser? Maruti's Premium Car Ionizer has no filter. Ion generators can produce ozone, which the US EPA describes as a lung irritant that can worsen asthma (EPA). Filters remove particles instead. They are not substitutes.

Listed device prices run from about ₹3,900 to ₹59,000, though the bottom of that range is the ioniser. Among priced purifiers it starts at ₹3,990.

A note on method

• Every figure comes from the manufacturer's own page, or from its authorised distributor where the maker publishes no India price.
• Prices, stock and pages change without notice. IQAir's own two India URLs were ₹100 apart on the day I checked.
• Each table carries a link check recording what every source said that day, so you can see what was verified and what was not.
• I plan to re-verify both tables quarterly. Prices, stock and manufacturer pages can change between checks.
• Stock status and promotional offers are deliberately not recorded.
