India is one of the fastest-growing construction markets in the world. Every new metro line, highway expansion, housing colony, and commercial complex is a sign of progress, but it comes with an invisible cost that most residents near construction zones breathe in every single day.
Construction and road dust combined are among the largest contributors to PM10 in every major Indian city, yet they receive far less public attention than stubble burning or Diwali smog. What Is Construction Dust? It's Not Just Dirt
Construction dust is a complex mixture of chemically distinct particles, many of which are hazardous at concentrations far below what you can see or smell.
Concrete & cement dust
Alkaline particles that irritate airways and can cause chemical burns with prolonged exposure.
Crystalline silica (quartz dust)
Released when cutting, drilling, or crushing stone, bricks, concrete, and sandstone. The most dangerous component, classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by IARC.
Gypsum & calcium compounds
From drywall and plaster work.
Heavy metals
Lead, chromium, cadmium from older structures being demolished, paints, and pipes.
Asbestos
From demolition of pre-1990s buildings.
Resuspended soil
Carrying bacteria, fungal spores, and minerals from disturbed ground.
Key fact: Crystalline silica is classified as a known human carcinogen (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). When inhaled, silica particles embed permanently in lung tissue. This damage cannot be reversed.
The Health Impact: From Irritation to Incurable Disease

Practical steps to reduce dust exposure inside your home.
Keep windows closed during peak construction hours
Most heavy activity (drilling, excavating, mixing, cutting) happens 8 AM to 6 PM. Close windows during these hours. Ventilate in early morning before 7 AM or after 7 PM when dust has settled.
Use weather stripping and door seals
Gaps around window frames and under doors are primary entry points for outdoor dust. Apply foam weather stripping (₹100–300 per roll) to window frames and door edges (a one-time investment that also improves AC efficiency).
Run an air purifier with a pre-filter + HEPA filter
Near active construction, a standard HEPA-only purifier may get overwhelmed by coarser PM10. Look for a purifier with a dedicated pre-filter for larger particles, followed by a HEPA filter. Clean the pre-filter every 2–3 months in heavy construction environments.
Damp mop floors daily instead of dry sweeping
Dry sweeping re-suspends settled dust particles back into breathing air. Damp mopping traps them in the mop and removes them from your home. This single habit change can halve the amount of dust you re-inhale.
Use a heavy-duty doormat and enforce shoe removal
A thick coir or rubber doormat captures significant coarse dust. Combine with a strict no-outdoor-shoes indoors policy. Change clothes after extended outdoor exposure near construction zones.
Cover and protect soft furnishings
Upholstered sofas, beds, and carpets trap fine particles that slowly re-release. During intense construction phases, cover mattresses and sofas with washable cotton covers laundered weekly.
Clean AC filters every 4–6 weeks
During heavy construction periods, AC filters can clog in weeks rather than months. A clogged filter fails to clean air and reduces cooling efficiency. Clean with water every 4–6 weeks and service annually.
When You Step Outside
Minimise exposure during commutes and outdoor activities.
Wear an N95 mask near active construction zones
Cloth masks offer negligible protection against fine construction dust. An N95 or KN95 mask is the minimum effective protection, especially on school runs and walks past construction corridors.
Avoid lingering near peak-activity construction
Concrete cutting, stone grinding, demolition, and dry mixing generate the highest concentrations of silica dust. When passing such sites, move quickly and breathe through your N95 mask.
Time outdoor exercise away from construction activity
Elevated breathing rates during exercise mean you inhale 3–5× more particles per minute than at rest. Switch to a park or greener route away from active construction corridors.
Tip #11: Create a Designated Clean Room
If construction is ongoing near your home for months, which is common with metro and flyover projects, designate one bedroom as a clean room. Seal it thoroughly, run an air purifier inside continuously, and keep the door closed. This gives your most vulnerable family members at least one space with reliably clean air.
